"As a coeliac, it's always a special thing when I run across a restauraunt where every menu item is safe for me to consume. We'd heard good things about the Pig & Potato, and stopped in recently while visiting York. Food was incredible--a good selection of sausage and mash dishes, and portions are enourmous (I got a kids portion and it was perfect for me). Our starter (halloumi fries) and our dessert (sticky toffee pud!!!) were also INCREDIBLE! Atmosphere is very laid back, but clean and modern. Bar seating is also available. A perfect meal on a cold snowy day, we plan to be back!"
"We stumbled across this place and are so pleased we did! The staff are really friendly and welcoming. We stopped to play a few games of pool and have a few relaxing drinks to get out of the rain, then decided to eat. The food was fresh, homemade, good portions and really tasty. Highly recommend visiting this great venue while visiting lovely York!"
"Random find on Google Maps but so happy we stumbled across this gem! Arrived around 9pm and just managed to catch the kitchen still open (thank you lovely staff!) food was absolutely outstanding"
"Excellent FULLY GLUTEN FREE restaurant in the middle of York. Lovely welcoming place, smart decor, soft lighting and helpful staff e.g Alice who explained that they could make a kid's portion of sausage and mash and gravy (without the unusual flavours which are all over the delicious-sounding menu) if the child prefers a plain meal. Also loaded nachos (meat or meat-free) and a side order of fries, went down very well for an older child. The adults all really enjoyed their food too. No tea available, but coffees, cocktails, wines etc and soft drinks. Plus you get tap water brought to your table upon arrival which is a nice touch. I bet most people don't realise it is gluten free. We will be back every time we visit York!"
"I have been here twice now with different friends. Only I am gluten free and was very excited to be able to go somewhere that I can eat everything on the menu. The food is amazing, the focaccia especially is lovely. My gluten eating friends all agreed it was amazing for gluten free bread. The portion sizes are very generous!! Came today for the Sunday roast which was delicious. My vegetarian friend was highly complimentary of the vegetarian sausage!"
"A quaint little place, hidden away down a York side street. Almost walked past it, as it was in the same entrance as another restaurant. The 2 young ladies, probably students judging by their age and accents, showed just the right level of attention. Not too in your face, asked the right questions, at the right times. The restaurant itself is quite small, nice rustic decor, fit well with the area of York it was in. It was quite cold inside, no idea if that is normal. The food itself was very nice, well made and presented. At the time I thought it came out slowly, but upon checking the time, I know it was quicker than most places. The portions were quite small to what I am used to, but food of that quality generally does come in small quantities. One small snag, I did ask for the tiger prawns from my wife's starter to be put on the side. She doesn't like seafood and greedy me intended to eat them. They never turned up, not such a big deal. People who mess about with food in that way, do deserve to get screwed over lol. The bill was pretty much as expected for what we had, given the quality, so definitely no complaints."
"We're local to York and wanted to visit somewhere that we hadn't been before, so chose Pig & Potato because it's January and what better than sausage and mash to warm you up on a cold night? Well, let me tell you.. it's not just sausage and mash, it's the best sausage and mash I ever experienced (sorry mum)! There was a good selection of sausages to choose from, all with different accompaniments. My head was turned by Welsh Dragon, which claimed to sometimes be a little spicy.. but in the end I opted for chicken thigh and chestnut mushroom, which came with roasted carrots. When the big, low sided bowls arrived I knew it was going to be amazing - the sausages (2) were huge, the mash so creamy and the carrots sweet and buttery, the gravy was the perfect thickness and pulled it all together. The flavours were absolutely wonderful! I think we just sat in silence, smiling while we ate We were so full after this that we shared a dessert between us. However, the massive chunk of sticky toffee pudding that we ordered went down so well that we wished we'd got one each! The atmosphere of the restaurant is exactly what we go for, dark lighting and great music (obviously the owners have amazing taste, which is reflected in the musical artwork on the walls). We especially enjoyed the little wooden table lights that looked like mushrooms. I would definitely recommend Pig & Potato. Warmed us right up for the January night ahead, but also I would love to go back and try the "Snackaroonios" including loaded chips / nachos!! I think we'll be regulars Bonus points for the Foosball table by the loos - joyful!"
"I went here for Valentine’s Day with my Gluten-Free Girlfriend. All of the food options were gluten free so there were no concerns with cross-contamination. Food prices were modest however the service and the taste was worth the price. Would highly recommend visiting this restaurant if you are in York. It is worth the visit."
